A house divided? GEJ support groups threaten to disrupt SURE-P programme

by Isi Esene

The success of the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) initiated by the Federal Government to effectively utilize the proceeds of the fuel subsidy is being threatened as a group called the Coalition of Goodluck Jonathan Support Groups (GSG) are protesting the alleged removal of some state chairmen of the programme.

The GSG released a statement yesterday threatening to mobilize its members to disrupt the implementation of the SURE-P in Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Osun, Ondo and Bauchi state if the chairmen are not re-instated.

Edi Nwabueze, the national coordinator of the group, urged the president to promptly address the matter.

Nwabueze said: “We are advising the president to investigate who and how the state chairmen of SURE-P implementation committee in seven states were dropped when they have already been issued letters of appointment. Is this democracy?

“We shall mobilize  men, youths and women in the seven affected states to make it difficult for the SURE-P programme to successfully kick-start  in the affected states if our chairmen who were issued letters of appointment are not reinstated.”

The group reportedly staged a protest the major streets of Abuja last week over the replacements in the states.
