Busted: Burglar caught after getting stuck in a chimney – See (embarrassing) Photo

POLICE HANDOUT

Case would not have been able to descend into the store even if he were slender enough to reach the chimney’s bottom, as it’s sealed off.

Only Old St. Nick can pull off this trick!

A would-be burglar got stuck in a chimney as he tried to bust into a Harrison, Ark., pawn shop late Tuesday night.

“I’m still in disbelief. When we came into work, I opened the door up and heard some sounds,” Capital Pawn owner Ernest Raney told the Daily News. “I thought maybe something got lodged in there.”

But Raney did not suspect that something to be a fully grown man.

Ernest Raney’s shop saw $2,500 in damage from the bizarre incident.

Ernest Raney’s shop saw $2,500 in damage from the bizarre incident.

Michael Wayne Case Jr., 38, yelled up that he just fell in — a highly improbable tale. Given its opening of only 10 ½ inches by 11 inches, it is a wonder that he managed to finagle his way inside at all.

“His mouth was real violent. He cursed and basically used foul language that I don’t repeat,” said Eaney, whose wife, Marie Raney, called the police.

Firemen and police arrived and threw a rope down to Case, who caused $2,500 in damage to the structure, so that they could pull him out of the tight spot.

Michael Wayne Case Jr. said he had simply fallen into the tiny space. Nevertheless, he has been charged with commercial burglary, criminal mischief and resisting arrest.

Even if Case were slender enough, he would not have been able to get inside the store, because the chimney is sealed off at the bottom.

“Chimneys don’t go straight down,” Marie Raney said. “He didn’t know chimneys himself. If it had been possible, he could not have gotten out of our store because we have burglary alarms. He wasn’t thinking.”

Harrison Police Assistant Police Chief Sam Martin confirmed that Case faces charges of commercial burglary, criminal mischief and resisting arrest. He also said this is the first rescue of its kind for the force.

“Had this happened on a Saturday night, he could have been trapped in there for much longer than he was, and it could have been real serious,” Martin told The News.

“I’m glad he wasn’t hurt,” Marie Raney said.
