Carpenter, 43, docked over alleged N200,000 fraud

Court-2

A 43-year-old carpenter, Ibrahim Yekini, on Friday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, charged with defrauding his customer of N200,000.

Yekini is facing a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretences and stealing.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offences at 10:00 p.m.  on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9 at 25, Nativity Close, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi.

Kokoye said that the accused, on the pretext that he was going to construct a wardrobe and kitchen cabinet for Mrs Folake Olaoshe, unlawfully obtained the money from her.

The prosecutor said that the complainant tried to contact Yekini to fulfill his part of the agreement, to no avail.

He said that the offences committed contravened Sections 285 and 312 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that anyone who is found guilty of obtaining by false pretences is liable to 15 years imprisonment.

Yekini, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Counsel for the defendant, Mrs Helen Ibeji, pleaded with the Magistrate for liberal bail conditions because there was an ongoing process of settling the matter out of court with the complainant.

“The accused has turned a new leaf and is ready to settle with Mrs Olaoshe,” she said.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. Olanipekun, granted Yekini bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Jan. 27, 2014, for mention.
