Death toll in Kogi Deeper Life Church attack rises by four

by Isi Esene

Four additional victims of the shooting at a Deeper Life Church, Okene, Kogi State, have been confirmed dead. Gunmen attacked the church, yesterday evening, while a church service was in progress. The gunmen were reported to have blocked the exit of the church and started shooting indiscriminately at the worshippers.

The attack claimed fifteen lives instantly with another severely injured church member reported to have died in the hospital yesterday.

According to the Vanguard Newspapers, the Commander of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) in Lokoja, Lt-Col. Gabriel Olorunyomi, confirmed the latest development saying, “They were doing their normal Monday evening service. When we went there we discovered the church had been attacked. Instantly we saw 15 people dead, including the pastor.”

“The military has since learned that an additional four people had died from their injuries,” Olorunyomi explained.

Even with the increased number of casualties, observers believe the figure might further increase considering the severity of the injuries sustained by the victims of the unfortunate church attack.

No individual or group hs so far claimed responsibility for the unexplained attack but the Boko Haram Islamic sect has claimed responsibility for a slew of attacks on churches.

The Boko Haram militant group have constantly terrorized many parts of Northern Nigeria but the Kogi attacks if found to be by the group, has widened its area of operation further south, into the middle belt of Nigeria, a development which is of serious concern to many security stakeholders.
