Manchester United’s coach David Moyes was sacked today and we keep wondering at which point things went wrong with the coach who was once the ‘golden boy’ since he was hand-picked by Sir Alex Ferguson as his successor to keep leading the club into victory.

We take a look back at what Moyes said to the press after the games that defined his season, from “I don’t know what we have to do to win” to “it would have been difficult for [Sir Alex] this year as well”.

Here’s how it all went from for Moyes…

First presser 5th July

“I’m inexperienced in a lot of things and there were some brilliant managers who could have quite easily taken this role but the biggest confidence I got was that Sir Alex Ferguson said to me ‘you’re the next Manchester United manager’.

“I hope we play the same way, with the same traditions and entertaining, exciting football. I’ve always said the biggest thing in football is to win, the job here is to win. I would always put winning at the top of the list. Sir Alex would as well. If you had a great entertaining team but didn’t win the games, it doesn’t quite get you anywhere. You have to get the balance right and hopefully I can.’

“I actually think it is doing well in all the competitions, not just the Premier League. When you are at Manchester United, my thinking is that you have to go for everything, you attempt to win everything.

“Maybe you miss out sometimes, but you have to attempt to win all the trophies. I have done it everywhere else I’ve been, and I will certainly do it here because I have a bigger squad, quality players and a club with the tradition of being use to winning things.”

July 2013 – on fixtures list

“I think it’s the hardest start for 20 years that Manchester United have had. I hope it’s not because Manchester United won the league quite comfortably last year (that) the fixtures have been made much more difficult. I find it hard to believe that’s the way the balls came out of the bag, that’s for sure. But if it is a hard start for Manchester United, it is a hard start for everyone else because they have to play us.”

First (and only) silverware: Moyes holds aloft the community shield

“I class that as another piece of silverware for Sir Alex. It was his team that won the league by 13-15 points so it’s his team. The ones going forward will be down to me.

“I’m concerned we gave away couple of free kicks on the edge of the box. But Wayne Rooney was absolutely terrific tonight, I was shouting at him in the last five minutes though.”

September 2013: Man Utd 1-2 West Brom

“It was the whole thing. We were lacklustre in nearly all the areas, so we’ve got to try and work on it and improve. We are just not playing that well. We should be scoring more from open play and we should be defending better. There were lots of things that disappointed me.”

Feb 2014 Stoke 2 United 1

“I don’t know what we have to do to win. We played well today.”

March 2014: Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool

Before game: “Their [Liverpool’s] league position suggests they are ahead of us and they possibly do come here as favourites. Liverpool are having a very good season and we will have to do everything we possibly can to beat them.”

After: “The job was always going to be hard. Is it harder than I thought it would be? Yeah, I would say so.”

March 2014: Man Utd 0-3 Man City

“I think we’ve played a very good side and it’s the sort of standard and level we need to try and aspire to get ourselves to at this moment in time. I think we need to play better. We’re needing to come up a couple of levels at the moment and we’re not quite there.”

March 2014: Man Utd 3-0 Olympiakos

“I’m not feeling any pressure from inside the club. We know the job we have to do, it’s probably bigger than what I thought when I first came to the club. People are looking for reasons why we are not doing well but it is only because we have not been playing well. I don’t see why [United can’t win the competition]. If we can play to our capabilities, I think we can be a match for any team.”
Moyes on Rooney

Troubled: Wayne Rooney has had a difficult season under Moyes

“He has a big energy back again. Everyone who knew Wayne Rooney from old in his early days would say one of the biggest things was that he had big energy, a big heart and his effort. And if you get Wayne playing like that, the rest of his football takes care of itself.”

 March 2014: On sir Alex

“I actually think if Sir Alex was here this year it would be difficult for Sir Alex as well, and I’m sure he’d be aware of it. I think people are aware there’s a squad that is a bit more aging, so I think it would have been a tough season for probably whoever was in charge of Manchester United this year.”
