Attack on Emir: Buhari’s statement is reckless and opportunistic – Presidency

by Akan Ido

The presidency has described comments made by Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) over Saturday’s attack on the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, as “reckless and opportunistic.”

It advised politicians, especially those in the opposition, not to use the unfortunate incident to score cheap political points.

The presidency noted that the comments by Buhari and the Nigeria Labour Congress were “irresponsible”.

Buhari, the leader of the Congress for Progressive Change had through the party National Publicity Secretary, Rotimi Fashakin said, “The country was not just under an ominous cloud of insecurity but that its citizens were also victims.”

Dr. Doyin Okupe, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, gave the position of the presidency yesterday. He said, “The statement by Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, his party, the CPC, is unfortunate, reckless and opportunistic”.

“Any attempt to politicise this unfortunate attack on the revered Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, and members of his family is irresponsible,” he added.

“Though, the attack itself is regrettable, it is difficult at present to blame it on the Boko Haram or terrorism or in fact, on some criminal elements within the society that hid under the spate of insecurity in the state to perpetuate this heinous crime.”

Okupe did not spare words in addressing the Nigeria Labour Congress saying, “We are not impressed by similar stance by the NLC that is supposed to be non-partisan in nature and in all approaches.

“There is indeed absolutely no need to politicise this unfortunate attack on the revered emir.”

He assured that relevant security agents are doing all they can to be bring the perpetrators of the crime to book.

Okupe said there is crime in Nigeria, just like every other country, and it is unreasonable to blame president Goodluck Jonathan for such violent attacks.

“At that moment in the United States, no American citizen or group blamed the killings on the President or the government, in spite of avalanche of security apparatus and expertise available to the United States Government,” he said.

He reportedly called on the citizenry to pull resources together to support government and the security agencies to ensure the arrest of the criminal elements.
