Esta Morenikeji: Before meets after – A personal weight loss story (Y! Superblogger)

Don’t let anyone convince you that some are born to be thin while some are born to be fat, that my friend is a big lie.

A while ago I was invited to a live television show to discuss weight loss. At the end of the show came the moment (I have never really paid much attention to ‘the moment’! The moment I’m referring to is when I lost 23kg from my former weight of 92kg).

On the screen was an old picture of me and for a second I thought ‘wow’ that used to be ‘me’. I couldn’t help but laugh at the lady in picture.

She used to be the fat version of me! But I don’t detest her. Even now at 67kg I still don’t detest that 92kg lady, because out of her came my new fit and strong body. Had she not existed, I wouldn’t be writing this article today. So I’m thankful for the lady in the picture. Looking at my old picture reminded me of that singular decision I made in December 2007 to treat my body with RESPECT so that it could serve me well into my old age.

That old picture also reminded me of my early days in the gym, those early days when a 15-minute workout was a chore, when I couldn’t even do one proper push-up… I have indeed come a long way!

It has been a journey from being fat to being fit, a progressive journey to physical strength and endurance. Above all, it has been a journey to self-discovery and to my maximum potential, because being able to lose that much weight has taught me that I can achieve anything I set my mind to.

I understand that being in shape means different things to different people. For some being in shape could mean fitting into a smaller dress size, for others it could mean being able to climb the stairs without getting out of breath; For you it could mean being able to run around with your kids without getting tired, or being able to look and feel younger than your age. Whatever ‘being in shape’ means to you, I’m here to be your Fitness Friend because fitness is fun and very rewarding too.

My passion for fitness was born out of personal experience. What I do is what I teach. I love fitness, and I love to see people fit and strong. I love the expression and the excitement I see, when a person who couldn’t walk for 15 minutes is able to run for 1 hour. I love the joy I see in people’s eyes when the scale begins to shift and their clothes become too big because their hard work is paying off. It’s such a pure joy to see people do what they never thought they could physically do before.

Don’t let anyone convince you that some are born to be thin while some are born to be fat, that my friend is a big lie. You may not have any control over your genes, but you can give them a good run for their money. I have been fat before. I understand the issues first hand. That is why I can say with total confidence that losing weight and being fit is possible.

It’s on that note that I welcome you to my maiden article on YNaija! Stay with me and I’ll give you the tips and tools you need to get the SHAPE you want!

Till I come your way again, I remain your Fitness Friend!
