Exclusive: I’m not scared of Chocolate City – MI

by Chi Ibe

In this interview with the rapper and label executive, MI relaxes and banters with Y! writer Chi Ibe about his music, rumours of a split with his label, marriage and a new magazine-website hybrid he is set to launch.

Why have you been quiet?

Quiet? Would you say I’ve been quiet? Nah, start of the year was rough. I was quiet; watching and praying. Then been busy doing music, launching a site and started a label. We have a vision for the site so it’s very time consuming. It’s a lifestyle magazine and not just a site. Doing it has been a learning curve because we thought it was easy but it’s indeed hard.

Why set up a record label when you are ‘with’ Chocolate City (CC)?

Any label in America starts out under another then becomes a big strong family—first Interscope, then came Deathrow under Interscope, Shaddy under Deathrow, G-Unit under Shaddy. So it’s standard practice.

Let me come out and ask it—are you leaving CC?

No I’m not! I’m definitely Chocolate City. I’m even more interested now than I’ve ever been.

Really? Because of ‘Keem Belo-Osagie’s involvement?

No actually, ‘cause I didn’t even know him before then so not because of him. But of course it’s a good partnership as CC has huge opportunities for both parties. People think he is dashing us money but no, [it’s because] he sees so much potential.

Some people say you can’t leave CC because you are scared of the legal implications and it’s easier to stay with the team, especially Audu (Maikori)—how true is that?

It’s not because I’m scared of Audu. It’s a conversation away if I want to leave. Our relationship is good and not about contract. They are my blood so no issues at all. We are even in the middle of signing a new contract. We’ve negotiated and agreed on all terms, it’s just papers left.

You signed a girl?

CC did not me. Her name is Pryse, she’s a rapper. Best female in Nigeria I dare say.

Which of the new hip-hop acts is taking part of your market share or scaring you with possibility of taking over?

None of them scare me. There will always be friendly competition even if it’s denied but what’s most amazing for me is to see people who I was part of their story now this big.

When are you getting married?

To be continued.

Seriously, when?

I don’t know.

Why?

I’m not ready.

Why are you not ready?

Because I’m not ready.

That’s all?

I’m just not ready. You when are you getting married?

To be continued (Laughter).

  1. Please what is this? Terrible way to start an interview; "why have you been quiet?"

Are you a gossip reporter? Why are you hounding the man about his personal life?

Mostly poorly constructed questions, please do better.
