From the Magazine: ‘He’s a cool guy’- Y! speaks to Cool FM’s Benny Ark

Benny Ark is an on-air personality with Cool FM 96.9 Abuja

How long have you been on the radio?

Six years now.

How did you get on the radio?

Through an audition. It was a reality radio competition called ‘The Broadcaster’ on 96.9 Cool FM Abuja.  I’d always been a radio listener growing up, and had great admiration for on-air personalities I grew up listening to in Kaduna. I knew I had a flare, a liking for radio because I am a music lover. So the radio where I could listen to music was my best companion.

The competition ran for three weeks and they were looking for just one person to crown and employ. There had been ‘The Broadcaster 1’ before mine, which was ‘The Broadcaster 2’.

Who do you look up to in the industry?

Rick Dees and Ryan Seacrest.

What programmes do you anchor?

I used to anchor The Good Morning Nigeria Show but now I’m on rush hour show called ‘The Road Show’.  It runs from 3pm – 8pm every week day.

What are the challenges of being a radio OAP?

The need to keep up with the ever changing trends. Being able to capture the minds of 101 listeners as just one listener, preparing your show preps with materials that are interesting and your listeners will find captivating. And of course the personal challenge to remain relevant.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

I’ll probably be on TV, would have hosted a couple of reality shows, become a clothier and of course, still be on the radio.Y!
