Sanchez signs for Arsenal 1

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre, has said that Arsene Wenger did not need to sign Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona. as the club already have similar players.

Sanchez became the second most expensive signing for the Gunners, after they paid about £31.8million to the La Liga club for his services after the 2014 World Cup.

Silvestre, who played for Arsenal for two years, believes Wenger should have looked at other areas instead of signing the Chilean.

“Arsenal have already got that type of player – quick, sharp, fast – they have enough of them already in Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla,” Silvestre told Goal.

“What they really need is someone like Olivier Giroud, I think that should be their priority at the moment.

“Sanchez could have gone anywhere after his tremendous World Cup but I do not think he is the type of player the club need right now.”

Silvestre, who featured in two World Cups and won 40 caps for France, also tipped Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, to become the future leader of Les Blues.

“He is 21 and he has consistently been doing well over the [last couple of] years,” the 36-year-old added.

“The way he has been playing for Juventus is very impressive. In the near future he will be a force for France.”
