Gynaecologist convicted of sex assault on pregnant patient

by Rachel Ogbu

It’s a bizarre world we are living in, a Chicago-area gynaecologist was convicted today after sexually assaulting a pregnant patient during a pelvic exam.

Bruce Sylvester Smith, who was in a position of trust violated it, was allowed to keep his medical practice for years despite numerous allegations of sexual misconduct by several other former patients as well.

Finally a Cook County jury today found Smith guilty in the presence of the victim of the August 2002 sexual assault at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

The jury deliberated for just over an hour before convicting Smith on both counts of criminal sexual assault stemming from the attack on the woman.

Smith, who has been in custody since he was charged in 2010, faces up to 15 years in prison. He could be sentenced by Judge Clayton Crane as soon as Februry 13.
