Owerri, Imo State

Nigerians are in a heightened state of alertness after several groups have come forward to say that there may be a move to shift the thrust of terrorist attacks to the south of the country.

On Wednesday a gardener found the explosive device at Umudo Village Hall, close to Saint Theresa Catholic Church in Obollo, Isiala-Mbano local government, Imo State.

According to the Divisional Police Officer, I. M. Anaforom, the device was a  foreign device, and not the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that are typically used. The anti-bomb squad was sent into the area, where they exploded the bomb.

“We rushed to the scene, assessed the situation, cordoned off the area and alerted the appropriate authorities,” Anaforom said. “That was how the bomb disposal unit of the State Police Command was called in to detonate the bomb.”

The police are pursuing an investigation, and frightened residents who had fled were told to return home, and to report any more suspicious items to the police.
