The police on Wednesday arraigned a man, Joshua Olanrewaju and his wife, Eloho, before a Kubwa Senior Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attempting to set their landlord’s house on fire.

The police prosecutor, Cpl. Garba Abdul, told the court that Paulinus Asika, a resident and landlord of No. 8, Zone D, Dutse, Abuja, alleged in a statement to the police that the couple attempted to set his house on fire.

Abdul said that Asika disconnected the couple’s source of electricity supply because they failed to pay their electricity bill.

“Their landlord disconnected their light after several attempts to convince them to pay their share of the bill, had failed.

“They threatened to burn down the house if he failed to reconnect them. They later damaged a cable, leading to a fire outbreak in the house,” Abdul said.

He said the accused committed the offence of joint act, criminal intimidation and attempt to commit mischief, which contravened the provisions of sections 79, 397 and 95 of the Penal Code.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the prosecutor prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him assemble his witnesses to prove his case.

The Senior Magistrate, Ms Rosemary Kanyip, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 and one surety each in like sum.

“Each of the sureties must have a fix address and must be responsible people,” Kanyip ruled.

She adjourned the case to March 19 for continuation of hearing.
