“I want to feel like a kid again” – The story behind Snoop Dogg’s name change to Snoop Lion

by Adeniyi Abdul

In the spirit of personal and perhaps artistic reinvention, veteran rapper Snoop Dogg has announced that he has changed his stage name to “Snoop Lion”.

We assume this was meant to show a progression of some sorts but then it ends up being some form of shift altogether as lions are of the cat family and not dogs but that’s neither here nor there at this point.

The journey to this new self began with a trip to Jamaica for a documentary which features him making music. The documentary, which is to the released at the Toronto Film Festival later this year also reveals details of his personal life and is titled “Resurrection”, the same name as a reggae album he plans to release later.

The rapper who has made the move from his real name Calvin Broadus Jr. to Snoop Doggy Dogg in the early 90s before emerging Snoop Dogg, said his encounter with rastafarian priests on his journey helped lead to this self-discovery.

“I didn’t want to be Snoop Dogg on a reggae track,” the rapper said at a press conference in New York. “I wanted to bury Snoop Dogg and become Snoop Lion, but I didn’t know that until I went to the temple and received the name Snoop Lion from the Nyabingi priest.”

“I went to the temple, where the high priest asked me what my name was, and I said ‘Snoop Dogg’. And he looked me in my eyes and said, ‘No more. You are the light; you are the lion’.”

Continuing, he added, “I’ve won every accolade you can get in rap, they call me ‘Uncle Snoop’ in rap. When you’re an uncle, it’s time to find something new. I want to feel like a kid again.”

The rapper’s official website has also been changed to http://snooplion.com to reflect this new chapter in his life.
