Broken Record: “Improve service quality or get sanctioned” – FG threatens telecoms companies

by Isi Esene

The Federal Government has threatened to stop all marketing promotions run by telecommunications companies which tends to increase its customer base.

The minister of communication technology, Omobola Johnson, said this in Abuja yesterday explaining that the uncontrolled increase in customer base exerts undue pressure on the network resulting in poor service quality.

“In the coming days, the Nigerian Communication Commission would curtail or stop all promotions that either increase subscribers minutes or add to the subscriber base that are causing additional congestion on the network,” she said.

She reportedly said the government will review the telecommunications companies’ service quality by December with a view to sanctioning any company found wanting.

Johnson blamed the current infrastructural expansion, modernization and upgrade being undertaken by the some of the telecoms companies for the poor service quality experienced by subscribers.

She also cited the recent attacks on base stations in North-East and flooding  in parts of the the South as contributors the to poor service delivery by telecoms companies.
