It gets (even) worse: Police ‘forcefully’ withdraw security details from Amaechi’s aides

by ‘Jola Sotubo

The crisis in Rivers State yesterday assumed new dimensions as it was revealed that the state police command has withdrawn the security details of two of Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s aides.

According to reports, the policemen deployed for the security of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), George Feyii and the Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Tony Okocha have been ordered to vacate their duty posts.
However, the state police command has denied the allegations and said that there is no truth to them.
Leadership News reports:

LEADERSHIP FRIDAY gathered that no fewer than fifteen fully-armed policemen, acting on orders of the state commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu, invaded the official residence of Okocha on Thursday evening to forcefully withdraw two policemen attached to him.

It was further gathered that the invading policemen were armed with a signal to withdraw all the policemen on escort and guard duties with Okocha and Feyii.

LEADERSHIP FRIDAY learnt that when the 15 policemen got to the official residence of the Chief of Staff, located opposite the Government House, Port Harcourt, they kept banging the gate, with everybody in the expansive premises held hostage, in a war-like situation.

In the confusion, the security personnel on guard duty at Okocha’s official residence had to move to a safe point in the compound, which made it impossible for the main gate to be immediately opened.

In a telephone interview with LEADERSHIP FRIDAY, Okocha said: “The Special Protection Unit (SPU) of the Nigeria Police in Rivers State assigned some policemen to my official residence and for escort, but Mbu has withdrawn them and those with the SSG. We are left with only one orderly each.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Ahmed Mohammed said the allegation was untrue as the police has not invaded the residence of any political appointee in the Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi-led administration.
