Following reports that a proposed state visit by President Goodluck Jonathan to Canada was cancelled, the country’s embassy has responded.

The Canadian High Commission has described the rumours as false while also saying that there was no such scheduled visit.

There were widespread insinuations that the Canadian government cancelled the Nigerian president’s visit following his signing of a law criminalizing homosexuality.

Leadership reports:

The reports also said that the Nigerian Ambassador to Canada, Ojo Madueke, was told to inform President Jonathan that the state visit to Canada scheduled for February 13 -14, 2014 had been cancelled.

But when contacted, the Canadian High Commission in Abuja said that there was no visit ever scheduled for next month by President Jonathan to Canada.

“But we look forward to welcoming President Jonathan on a future date.

Basically, Canada and Nigeria enjoy shared opportunities for economic, social and security cooperation”, the High Commission said.
