One lucky centenarian from Wales celebrated his 106th birthday this weekend — 76 years after being declared dead.

In 1936, doctors ordered that Sam Ledward’s body be taken away after they concluded that he was dead. He’d had a serious accident when the front tire of his 500cc Triumph motorbike burst, according to the Mirror.

While approaching the mortuary, though, a hospital porter noticed that Ledward’s body was moving. Although he appeared to be dead, he was actually in a coma.

“You don’t get rid of me like that,” said Ledward, who was wheeled back to the hospital ward. Five days later, he awoke from his coma.

“My first recollection of anything was seeing someone stood round the bed and me knocking something out of someone’s hand,” he told BBC.

Since then, he has enjoyed an especially long life — one that he credits to the “sheer luck” of being spotted before he was buried. According to ITV, he and his late wife, Edith, lived together in Blackpool until she passed away in 1993.

Now, Millie Minshall, 90, Edith’s cousin, looks after Ledward in North Wales. Sometimes, he still feels the effects of the motorcycle crash.

“I still feel it, but you just have to grin and bear it, don’t you?” said Ledward, who doesn’t let it hold him back.

“I’m not too bad for an old codger.”

Ledward celebrated his 106th birthday last Friday with Minshall and her daughter’s family.

Minshall told the BBC: “He’s not bad, not bad at all.”
