More than half fail WAEC exams as blind students take the lead

by Rachel Ogbu

A massive 62.03 percent of students who wrote the November/December 2012 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination failed the test, the West African Examinations Council, WAEC announced.

More disheartening is that out of the 62.03 percent who failed, 11.04 per cent were withheld in connection with various cases of examination malpractice.

The council on Friday December 21 said it had withheld the results of 47,289 candidates out of 396,614 candidates that sat for the exam.

Head of the Nigeria National Office, WAEC, Charles Egurid said:

“These results are being investigated and the reports of the investigation will be presented to the Nigerian Examinations Committee of the Council shortly for consideration. The committee’s decision will be communicated to the affected candidates through our zonal and branch offices.”

On the brighter side, 150,615 obtained five credits including English Language and Mathematics.

Blind students performed better compared to those without sight problems as 46.93 percent of 49 students that registered for the examination obtained five credits including English Language. Blind candidates do not sit for Mathematics and Science practicals in WASSCE examinations.

“A total number of 49 blind candidates registered for the examination. Out of this figure, 23 candidates, representing 46.93 per cent obtained credits in five subjects including English Language,” Egurid said.
