“Can you marry someone you’ve not seen for 3 months?” – VP’s aide denies Nollywood’s Nkiru Slyvanus

by Rachel Ogbu

Since Nollywood actress, Nkiru Slyvanus was released after a kidnapping deal went burst, rumours that she secretly married the Senior Special Assistant (SSA), to the vice-president on Media and Publicity, Sani Umar, was all over social media.

To address the rumour, Umar yesterday in Abuja denied marrying the Imo State-born actress who is also special assistant on public affairs to governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State.

Umar looked upset when he was reacting to an online report in the social media that he recently married the actress in a secret location with only few friends present at the ceremony.

Speaking to State House Correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the vice-president’s official said: “The report is very funny. How can you marry somebody you have not seen for over three months? The last time I saw her was in September so how can a marriage take place when the subject matters have not seen each other?”

Umar said the story is not only “false” but “a figment of the writer’s imagination. I have not married Nkiru Sylvanus and if a wedding of such took place, people should be able to tell the venue, date and time. It is not true!

According to online sources, Sylvanus and Umar were in a relationship for a while and it was Umar, who allegedly got her political appointment in Imo State through his friendship with Rochas Okorocha. The wedding reportedly took place two weeks ago, was given a media blackout and attended by handful of family members because Umar already has a wife, placing Nkiru as his second wife.

On Saturday, December 15, 2012, Sylvanus was kidnapped by some gunmen in Owerri where the kidnappers demanded a N100 million ransom for her release. She was released a week later and there were reports that a ransom was paid.
