Opinion: Before you throw stones at Mallam Sanusi…

by Mohammed Dahiru Aminu

sanusi

To refuse to see and to refuse to condemn Emperor Jonathan’s unforgivable abuse of power, here, simply because Sanusi and you held different ‘subsidy’ dossiers in January 2012 is akin to saying that because the man smokes you are not taking part in putting off the fire that is razing his house down. How cruel

I understand that for some, to be unconventional is to hold an opposing view; to go ‘anti-’ especially when most people find it fashionable to go ‘pro-!’ But, mark you, whether you hold Sanusi angelic or satanic, Sanusi’s suspension by Emperor Jonathan cannot be downplayed, just so easily, with bureaucratic (read: hypocritical) verbiage!

Sanusi supported the removal of fuel subsidy in January 2012. He was suspended by Emperor Jonathan for whistle-blowing in February 2014. How do these compare? If you ask me, the case of fuel subsidy removal is one that is clearly opinionative and still open for debate. The case of Sanusi’s suspension by the Emperor is not even debatable. How do you make sense of the suspension of a public officer on account of not being a party in masking corruption in astronomical proportions?

Please feel free to exercise your rights to personal liberty, but rest, assured that civilization has gone way past that piecemeal you are offering. How cruel!

My great uncle, Dr Raji Bello, caught it perfectly when he wrote that “the fact that Sanusi sided with the President, Minister of Petroleum Resources and Minister of Finance on subsidy removal in 2011 is not a minus for him but in fact, a plus. It shows that his positions on the economy and governance are principled and he can side with the government if he believes it is the right thing to do. It is strong evidence that he did not have a permanent default setting to oppose the government for political reasons.”

On a lighter note, if you are a believer in God, and in messianic eschatology, you might want to remember that even God weighs our sins upon a scale machine before telling us where we would eventually belong. I am glad that Sanusi’s only sins are his advocacy for fuel subsidy removal as well as his ‘reckless’ donations. Go do your homework, you might find out you’ve got far more sins!
