Reckless driving: 60 year old man charged with killing five people in Ogun

A trailer driver charged with the deaths of five people in Ogun State was yesterday arraigned before an Ota Magistrate Court. Wahab Olasunkanmi, 60, originally resident  at No. 11, Okesuna St., Surulere, Lagos allegedly drove his vehicle recklessly and hence caused the deaths of five people identified as Abdulazeez Balogun, 34; Abdulrasaq Busari, 34; Yakub Amsat, 33;Alhaja Kadijat Wahab,70; and Musa Ojo. According to reports, the accused is facing charges of manslaughter and reckless driving. The prosecution stated that the accused committed the offences on Sept. 7 at 3.00 p.m. at Idedo village, Atan on Ota-Idiroko road. “Olasunkanmi drove a trailer with registration no. XA 239 JJJ recklessly and killed five people at Atan on Sept. 7,” Prosecutor Brown Rosemary told the court. Rosemary noted that the offences contravened Sections 5 and 6(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation, 2006. The accused, however, denied the charges. In his ruling, the Magistrate, Adenariwo Soneye, granted him bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum. He said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government and that the police should also verify the addresses of the sureties. The case was adjourned to Oct. 24 for mention.
