The Obama inauguration, Iron Man 3, back-up for ‘NEPA’ and more! 10 must-dos and must-haves for 2013

by Rachel Ogbu

If you are still reading this and it’s past December 21, it means the predictions were wrong… again and the world didn’t end.

So to celebrate making it, let’s look into the New Year, 2013. Forget resolutions, here are things to do and have in 2013 from getting the new indestructible phone to going into space.

Technology

In 2013, internet-connected mobile devices will exceed the number of desktop and laptop computers… get connected.

Indestructible phones: the bendy screen smartphone is a smartphone touting a screen that we can bend, twist and hit! Yep. Samsung’s already demoed OLED display technology called the “Galaxy Skin” features a high-res 800×480 AMOLED screen, 8mp camera and 1Gb of RAM as well as a 1.2GHz processor.

The Lifebook: The Fujitsu Lifebook, coming in 2013, combines all the fancy pieces of technology into one. Detachable laptop’s camera used as a handheld digital camera. It’s also a tablet; open it up and pull that out as well. Put it back in and the tablet immediately displays itself as a touch-screen keyboard for the laptop. There is even a spot where you can attach and remove a special cell phone.

The price is undetermined, but don’t expect it to be cheap.

Politics

Watch the second inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States will take place on Sunday, January 20, 2013.

Space

In 2013 several private companies will blast off, carrying tourists into the great blackness of outer space. For $200,000, you can book a seat on Virgin Galactic’s 2½-hour suborbital flight, which includes a six-minute interval of weightlessness. Virgin trips take off from the newly built Spaceport America in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where passengers spend three days training before liftoff.

Agriculture

It’s not crap; go into farming if you can. Food prices will trigger riots around the world in 2013.

The world grain reserves are now at historically low levels, due to record droughts and heatwaves experienced in 2012.

Experts predict that because the world consumes more than it can produce, the resulting increase in food costs will spark riots and bring down a number of governments in Africa and the Middle East.*

Entertainment

Do go to the movies: We will see a few old action heroes return to the big screen. Arnold Schwarzenegger takes the cake appearing in The Last Stand, Ten, Captive and in The Tomb with Sylvester Stallone and 50 Cent. Kevin Costner will be in CIA, terrorist movie; Jack Ryan

Will Smith will feature in Greenbacks and with his son Jaden in After Earth alongside Sophie Okonedo.

More 2013 movies include The Wolverine, Man of Steel (Superman), Thor and Iron Man 3.

Listen to Eminem’s new album in 2013 and a potential surprise comeback from diva, Cher.

Medicine/Health

Lady Gaga is teaming up with her manager Troy Carter and photographer Terry Richardson to launch Pop Water, a healthy alternative to soft drinks, in 2013. The soft launch is set for January of next year.

The new beverage will be marketed as a better-for-you alternative to sugary soft drinks.

FDA could approve prescription drugs made from marijuana by 2013.
A British company, GW Pharma, is in advanced clinical trials for the world’s first pharmaceutical developed from raw marijuana instead of synthetic equivalents— a mouth spray it hopes to market in the U.S. as a treatment for cancer pain, do research more about this.

 Sports

Watch the 2013 African Under-17 Championship. Under-17 event will be held in Morocco from 13 to 27 April and the semi-finalists will represent Africa at the Under-17 World Cup in October.

The 2013 African U-20 Championship will be the 19th edition of the African Youth Championship. The competition will take place in Oran, Algeria, from March 16 to 30.

Power

Don’t throw away you generators just yet. Although President Jonathan announced that some cities will enjoy 24-hour power in 2013, the Sun is predicted to reach its peak of its 11-year solar storm cycle next year, and magnetic storms could knock out most of Earth’s electrical items included an Internet blackout so don’t forget to back up.

Business/Investment

Pfizer Inc’s planned U.S. initial public offering (IPO) of its animal-health unit Zoetis Inc is likely by January or February Industry analysts have valued the Pfizer animal-health business at $15 billion or more based upon its revenue of $4.2 billion in 2011.
