Twitter Personality: Olumide ‘Lumi’ Durotoye – “I won’t follow back if you ask for it!”

by Ifreke Inyang [@Ifreke]

Many don’t know that Olumide Durotoye is brother to popular rapper, Beazy. In his own words, “I’m just a guy that likes to speak his mind.” Lumi works for an energy company on the island and also manages Beazy and the company they started together, BeazyMusic Ent (BeMe). Lumi is our first Twitter Personality in August and he tells us about his Twitter experience so far.

How did you get on Twitter?
A few of my friends had been on it for a while and they kept trying to get me to join, but I always thought I wouldn’t have anything to say. Little did I know how wrong I was!

Who would you say is your favourite tweep?
I don’t think I have ONE favorite ‘tweep’. I have a bunch of people that I can’t imagine what my TL would be like without but I don’t think I can narrow it down to one.

Is there any particular tweet you’ll never forget? Tell us about it.
I think everyday on Twitter there’s at least one unforgettable tweet. And that’s assuming you follow the right people anyway.

Have you had any embarrassing/memorable experience on Twitter? If yes, what happened?
In life generally, I try to avoid embarassing situations, so it’s no different on Twitter. If you respect yourself, others will have to respect you. And for those that don’t there’s always the BLOCK option. A memorable day would have to be #SubliminalSaturday. People did something they rarely do on Twitter – they told each other the truth, in a roundabout, not really telling them sort of way.

What are the downsides of being on Twitter?
Twitter tends to take up a lot of your time. So if you don’t have the self discipline to put your phone down or step away from the computer, then you’re gonna end up with a few angry people. Usually these people aren’t on Twitter though!

What are the upsides?
Personally, it’s awesome having somewhere to just air your thoughts and opinions. On the business side, Twitter is probably the best thing that ever happened to networking and promo. If you have the followers and follow the right people you can probably find someone that knows someone that has what you need or needs something you have quickly. Not to mention that it’s cost effective.

Has Twitter gotten you more fans/friends?

Definitely. I’ve met some people on Twitter that I hope are gonna be in my life for a long time. I’ve also reconnected with some old friends too.

Many tweeps say you have a controversial persona on Twitter. Is this true?
Well, I like to think I tell it like it is, for the most part. I also have fairly strong opinions about certain issues and I have no problem making them known. Unfortunately, this will always be considered controversial so I guess it’s true.

Describe your Twitter persona in three words.
Would I sound too full of myself if I said blunt, witty and funny? 🙂

Do you follow back readily? Why?
Absolutely not. Asking for a follow back is the best way to ensure that I won’t follow back. I’ve found that the people that are worth following don’t have to ask for followbacks. Besides if you follow someone that constantly asks for followbacks that’s what you’ll always be seeing on your TL and that’s very annoying.

What would possibly make you close your Twitter account?
If I won the lottery, I’d send my last tweet ever that would say: “I’m rich b*tches!!!” and then I’d close my account and throw my phone away.
