Watch it, Wande! Here are Kel, Asa Asika & 5 other music separations that didn’t go so well

Wande-Coal

How is it that a man shines so bright one minute and the next he’s grey as ash?

The hot news is Wande Coal not just leaving, but attacking his erstwhile label boss, cheerleader and mentor, Don Jazzy. But before him, there was the quarrelsome Brymo, and before them… Well, I present the list!

Kel
Those who know these things insist the rapper and her label owner, Clarence Peters were a hot couple. You do remember Kel, right? At one time, she was the country’s hottest rapper, the real deal, the one who would pave the way for the girls. She left Capital Records, and she hasn’t been alright since. Not even a single worth boasting about. Really, a spectacular fall.

mochedda

Mo’Cheddah
It was the split heard across the industry. After sticking through thick and thin together (even fooling some of us into believing they were really family) the petite Mo’Cheddah decided one hit album from Knighthouse was enough and left the label, not without bad blood. Unfortunately, none of the parties has managed to recover ever since.

May-D
When the biggest news about you in the past many months is about the fake purchase of a run-down-looking house with unpainted walls and a gate about to imitate Humpty-Dumpty, then you know you made a (fatal career) mistake. May-D was about to make a mess of Psquare before those wise boys stepped in and managed the crisis (pay attention, Don Jazzy!). Today, he is all but a footnote.

ikechukwu

Ikechukwu
How is it that a man shines so bright one minute and the next he’s grey as ash? How did Ikechukwu move from centre of the action, to footnote to the main act? The answer probably lies in leaving his label, Storm Records, where he had his most passionate fans – who were ready to commit finances, energy, relationships, anything really, to get his show on the road. Alas, how are the six-packed fallen.

Asa Asika
This one is not a musician, but his fall is no less enchanting for the fact. Whilst he was Davido’s right hand man, Asa was a cliche – presumptuous, rude, dismissive, arrogant, evidently convinced of his own immortality. Those who knew better only called him unguided. It took a simple wave of the hand by the singer to remind everyone he was nothing more than accessory. Luckily for him, he is still so young, a recovery is only a dash of humility away.

Bankulli
Again, not a musician. Really, a hustler in whatever American state or British country would host him. Then D’banj made him manager, and he became Lord of the Manor. Just as quickly, the notorious flaky Banga Lee dropped him. And he vanished the way he came.

etc

Et Cetera
You really have to wonder – what gets into these boys? Everyone knew the only reason we were paying attention to the wailing voice, the pensive look, and that violin-powered video was because of the man behind the musician, Steve Babaeko.

Suddenly, he decided his talent was enough, appeared to bite the fingers that had fed him and left his label, XTRM. He has been certified irrelevant ever since.

May you fare better on your journey, Wande.

  1. Get your fact right Oga! I hate reading lame write-ups like this piece you wrote……what can be said of 2face today? Is he not at the top of his game? MayD is not doing bad also…Don Jazzy is a producer and not an artist per se….he's got no good and sellable voice….if he's the best then D'prince and Sid shld be flying high by now….I forsee Tiwa leaving also in the future. Don Jazzy is arrogant and full of pride….if Wizkid,Davido and rest could have hit songs with other producers…wande will definitely soar higher than you can imagine…..nuf said
