We did not kill Rashidi Yekini – Family

by Hauwa Gambo

Following speculations that the family of late Super Eagles striker and legend, Rashidi Yekini, might have played a part in his death in May this year, his family has spoken up.

“We did not kill Rashidi as it was widely publicised,” his younger sister, Rofiat, told Tribune at the wekeend. “What we were after at that time was his welfare and our action was as a result of the information we got that he was behaving irrationally which we felt required urgent attention.”

”His death just coincided with the time we came to take him away for medical attention. No member of the family is after Rashidi’s property as it is being speculated in some quarters.

“I, in particular, could not have been involved in any act that could lead to the death of a blood brother. It is a known fact that I cannot set my eyes on him again which is so painful.

She however apologised for their role in taking him to traditional healers, following suspicion he had psychiatric problems:

”I therefore want to use this medium on behalf of the family of Rashidi Yekini to apologise to Nigerians over our action that led to the death of our son and brother, which I must say was not intended at terminating his life as believed by many Nigerians and most especially soccer fans.

“We also want to thank them for their love for Rashidi Yekini while he was alive and even in death. We pray that God would stand by everyone at their time of trouble,” she said.
