A new threat to the proposed amnesty programme for the Islamic sect, Boko Haram and an even bigger threat to the country have come from ex-leaders of Niger Delta militants who recently warned that they will go back to the creeks if President Goodluck Jonathan is not allowed to re-contest in the 2015 presidential election.

The Niger Delta ex-militants who were offered a multi-million naira amnesty deal to drop their weapons said they will return as they believed the North was using Boko Haram to intimidate Jonathan out of the 2015 presidential election.

“They have been sending Boko Haram to harass and intimidate President Jonathan so that he will withdraw from the 2015 presidential race. Asari’s comment was not a threat; he (Dokubo-Asari) just wanted Nigerians to know that there is a need for Jonathan to go for two tenures,” the president of the Niger Delta Ex-agitators Forum, Amaibi Ombi said.

On Sunday in Port Harcourt the ex-militants gathered under the auspices of the NDEF and the Association for Non-violence in Niger Delta, said it would be out of the ordinary if Jonathan genuinely loses out in 2015.

The Punch reports:

Ombi, cautioned that it was better to allow for a free and fair election than to manipulate the process in order to scheme out Jonathan.

On the recent comments credited to the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, and Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, Ombi insisted that such statements could not be a threat to Nigeria as a country.

Dokubo-Asari had warned that Nigeria would be history if he was arrested for threatening violence in the whole country if Jonathan was not allowed to run a two-term tenure as President.

But Ombi described Dokubo-Asari’s stataement as no threat, but a statement to canvass the need for the President’s critics to allow him (Jonathan) run for two tenures in office.

“We will go back to the creeks if the 2015 presidential election is manipulated to scheme out President Goodluck Jonathan. But if the election is not manipulated, and Jonathan loses out, we would see it as the handiwork of God,” Ombi stressed.

In his remark, ANND President, Mr. Kenneth West, cautioned Kuku and Dokubo-Asari  against making inflamatory statements but warned against any move to arrest them over their comments on the 2015 general election.

West said some well-known political leaders in the northern part of the country had made similar comments in the past without anybody suggesting that they should be arrested.

He alleged that the corruption began in the North and wondered why nobody raised any dust on corruption when the northerners were in control of government.

“Asari only warned that in 2015, if Jonathan is not elected President, Nigeria will not be one. He was only warning; he was not threatening. If we are talking about corruption, it started from the North,” he said.

  1. A statement is a statement, what re we sayin here wen Asari made his statement he recalld others statement now his statement will forever be rememberd but to hell with and his statement goin back to a creeks or no goin back what diffrents does it make? We re all been afraid of God dats wy every 1 has his hands cross.think about it a voice of the nigerians gettin on to Asari’s statement.

  2. This Dokubo guy and his fellow militants are all greedy fraudsters.. how has their war help develop Niger delta? They are all fighting for their personal pockets and not the growth of Niger delta or Nigeria.. greedy fools

  3. Why should asari’s comment be judged when the people from the north have done and said worst. Northern are so greedy that they think nigeria is owned by them. This same northern elders like buhari,Ibb,atiku, sultan of sokoto, gov. Of niger state,CAN,CPC,and even senators, even the hausa in police, army Etc are the sponsors of this boko haram. This people are poor hausa Nigeria’s used for their selfish interest. Distracting the government of the day in the north and stealing the oil in the south east and south south. Well my advice to real nigeria’s is not to lose focus and really ask ourselves, why didn’t all this happen when the hausa’s where in power. We don’t expect Goodluck to be hard a the military president (obj). Ya’audua died and the hausa’s covered it to play nigeria’s,thanks to dora. Oil blocks 98% owned by hausa’s. Where did the hausa’s hide maina for stealing pension money. Faruk lawal almost played us,but thanks to obj. I can go on and on,but to finalize this,i have one question for the igbo men and women still staying in the northern part of boko haram: Can’t we just ask why the hausa’s here don’t rent houses, talkless of build, they have nothing big to leave behind a property of otherwise for us to take or destroy making them have the heart to kill us like fowls. Now we have power let’s kill it and let them go find there own country.
