The Premier League has confirmed that the ‘vanishing spray’ will be used in all league games from the 2014/2015 season.

UEFA had previously announced that the bright white foam, which became popular during the just concluded World Cup in Brazil, will be used during Champions League and Europa League games next campaign and now the Premier League has also adopted it.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: “At the Premier League we are open to developments that enhance the competition and it was clear from watching the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil that vanishing spray benefited referees, players, and all of those who watched the matches.”

The spray, which was invented by Brazilian Heine Allegmagne, helps officials mark out the 10-yard point which defensive walls must stand from free-kicks.

“I saw first-hand the benefits of vanishing spray for referees, and for the game as a whole,” Mike Riley, general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, said.

“The Select Group referees are looking forward to using it during Barclays Premier League matches next season.”
