What happened to Tomi?! XCLAMATIONS! leaves us dry and hanging at the LFDW

by Kayito Nwokedi

From the moment the first model walked out wearing a black linen shift dress, it was obvious this collection was going down the ethic African route, though, thankfully, we weren’t served a dish of costumes.

The first piece showed promise, however the designs that followed failed to reflect the fun, creative and energetic side of Africa – surely something designers are now conscious of.

Tomi Rotimi’s XCLAMATIONS! collection lacked that spirited vigor and, frankly, weren’t very original. More surprisingly for the Creative Entrepreneur of the Year winner, the theme stayed somewhat the same throughout the show: models came down the run way in different variations, but only slightly, and of the same clothing idea. A few tweaks here and there in length and colour – but nothing truly distinct.

In all, there was only one look that stood out and that for the fabric alone: the blue satin dress with pleats turned out to be the most interesting XCLAMATIONS! piece that graced the catwalk stage . The designer played much too safe with this range.

We call it a dangerous risk, but we are still cheerleaders for Tomi though – everyone has their off days!
