The trailer for the Biyi Bandele directed (and written) film adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, Half Of A Yellow Sun, debuted yesterday ahead of it’s presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, leaving in its wake tears of joy, screams about how good the movie looks, and arguments about whether or not the movie is “Nigerian” enough (feel free to roll your eyes at this point.)

Check out 5 things that stood out from the trailer.

It looks amazing.

We’ll just start with the obvious and state that, on a surface level, everything about the movie seems to be on point. From set design to costume design, there’s a visible attention to detail here which is nothing short of impressive.

Chiwetel Ejiofor does a mean Nigerian accent.

He may be born to Nigerian parents but that’s no guarantee of being able to pull of a Nigerian accent, for someone who’s spent most of his life in the UK. However that seems not to have hampered him at all as he delivers talks exactly like one would imagine the 60’s era well educated Igbo man he’s playing would.

Onyeka Onwenu’s still got it

“It” being whatever it is that has enabled her capture our hearts over the years, and whatever it is that made her 5 seconds in this trailer stand out as something to keep our eyes open for when the full movie becomes available.

Thandie Newton was a good casting choice.

Thandie

Yes many people whined and moaned about Thandie Newton being cast, raising numerous reasons including her nationality – ignoring the fact she’s supposed to be, you know, acting – and her skin colour – ignoring the fact that the stereotype about Igbo girls is that they are “yellow” – but from all indications, she’s delivering. Apart from the fact she’s been made to look quite like an Igbo girl, her acting seems to be strong, and she clearly has good chemistry with her co-stars, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Anika Noni-Rose (who, by the way, also looks like a stellar casting choice)

We’re going to need to get our tissues ready

From scenes featuring an explosion at a wedding, to people being shot without a second thought by soldiers, it’s clear the movie doesn’t shy away from the grittiness of the story and is going to pack quite the emotional punch.
