Gunmen in Kano yesterday attacked and killed an intelligence officer attached to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC) in the Hotoro area of the city.

Also killed in the attack was his wife, three-year old daughter, and physically challenged younger brother. The gunmen were said to have arrived at his residence on two motorcycle, entered the compound and opened fire indiscriminately.

The NSCDC official was identified as Ismaila Yerima. Others killed in the attack were identified as Aisha, his wife; Khadija, daughter; and Adam, younger brother.

Reports say the attack was very quick and neighbours had to take cover to prevent being caught up in the attack. The residents of the area immediately ran indoors and stayed in until security operatives arrived the area.

Witnesses say they saw a security helicopter hovering around the area in a bid to locate the possible whereabouts of the assailants.

Ismaila Yerima’s colleagues, who pleaded anonymity told the press that the late Yerima must have been mistaken for a State Security Service (SSS) operative, adding “he always appeared in suit and was very popular in the area.”

Ibrahim Idris, the Kano State Police commissioner said adequate security measures had been put in place to track down the killers, adding that everything possible will be done to bring them to book.
