Boko Haram 2.0? Sect publishes personal details of SSS operatives (including the DG)

by Isi Esene

The radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram, has published several names believed to be that of members of the State Security Service, the Associated Press reports exclusively.

“The leak of personal data of more than 60 past and current employees of Nigeria’s State Security Service remained easily accessible on the Internet for days and had details about the agency’s director-general, including his mobile phone number, bank account particulars and contact information for his son,” the report said.

The list which contains names, designations, home addresses, and names of immediate family members of several SSS operatives was released on the Internet today by the radical sect.

It is not clear how the sect obtained this classified information but observers believe the aim is to put the Nigerian security apparatus on the defensive.

The affected security personnel questioned the action of the spy organisation claiming they were not informed of the said breach, an act which greatly compromises their security.

Security experts also expressed surprise at the development wondering if the Nigerian intelligence community are too internally compromised to fight the scourge of insecurity ravaging the nation.

“This is a national embarrassment,” said one Nigerian intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as information about the leak was not supposed to have been made public.

“I was shocked to see my details posted on the Internet,” said one former agent, who declined to be named.

“I’ve not heard anything from anybody. I was surprised that such information could be leaked,” he said.

Reports say the first posting on the internet threatened to kill members of the SSS on behalf of the radical Islamic sect while the second only posted details of even more SSS members.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the spokesperson of the spy agency proved abortive but there are indications that the leaked information must have come from the organisation’s pension department which is in possession of several employee details including their banking information.
