It’s here: Modern Day School of Arts workshops kick off

by Chi Ibe

The Modern Day School of Arts is Nigeria’s first art school and was conceived to allow individuals explore and expand their innate creativity and talents. The institution is proud to run international art and design programs on a local landscape in a professional manner.

At the MDSA, the focus is on “freedom of expression, communication, imagination and cultural understanding. Manipulation of the world through the “Arts” is now at the fingertips of those who dare to take the bold step.”

Approved by the Ministry of Education, the School kicked off its workshops on January 21, 2013 with intensive classes for aspiring artists seeking careers in arts and design. The MDSA workshop series is made up of a community of art, design and media professionals dedicated to artistic practice through studio, workshop and classroom-based learning. Week after week, students, academic and technical faculty, visiting artists and industry representatives will work closely together in a supportive and friendly environment. Our talented and professional instructors/mentors who are recognized nationally and internationally, are enthusiastic about supporting imaginative growth by utilizing traditional and inventive tools and media that will further develop the creative potential of participants.

All the workshops advance particular integration of practice and theory, using industry standard resources. Participants will be encouraged and equipped to be both creative and critically engaged. We hope to teach and inspire people of all ages and interest.

Speaking on the reason for establishing the school, Founder and Director, Denrele  Sonariwo said:  “We are starting the workshop first. It is to give students an idea of what to expecting when we start fully in September. We have done some research and we have asked ourselves, where the jobs really are? As a creative person, you have the opportunity to do your own thing or work under people and if you are really talented, the sky is the limit for you.”
