Miss Scherzinger, who was the lead  singer of  American girl group the Pussycat Dolls before leaving to  pursue a solo career,  joined the X Factor panel last year, having  previously been a judge on the US  version of the show.

She mentored the boys’ category, which  included the winning act, James Arthur.

But she was unsure about returning for a  second series, because the commitment interrupts her working on her own  music.

She said: ‘I wasn’t sure. I got to  get the  music right. I’m an artist and I haven’t felt confident enough  with the stuff  that I’m doing. I just haven’t felt like I’ve got enough  of a cohesive album  that I’m proud of to put out.

‘And this takes up a lot of time, you know.  And I always commit myself 110 per cent. So I was torn. But then  Gaz [Gary  Barlow] texted me and I said yes.’

She added: ‘It’s great because we  have  artists versus managers and she [Sharon Osbourne] looks at things  from a  managers point of view and he [Barlow] looks at things from an  artist’s point  of view and I tend to side with him as well.’

Speaking during a break from watching hopefuls audition to go through to the boot camp stage of this year’s  competition, Miss Scherzinger also spoke of her admiration for Sharon  Osbourne, 60, who has returned as a judge on the ITV show after five  years  away.

She was one of the original judges, alongside  Simon Cowell, but has never mentored a winning act. Miss Scherzinger said:  ‘She [Mrs Osbourne] brought me onto X Factor, I  was her mentor at her house in  Beverley Hills many years ago.

‘She just  kind of took me under her wing and  she is really lovely as a woman.

‘It’s really nice to see other women  in the  industry who are kind and give empowerment to others. That’s  rare. Girls, we’re  catty and there’s insecurity but she’s a special  breed, she’s just awesome.

‘She’s just outrageous and fun and a  riot.’

Gary Barlow, 42, who replaced Cowell as head  judge two years ago, has returned for a third series.

He admitted having felt nervous about Mrs  Osbourne joining the show but said his fears were unfounded.

He said: ‘The one thing I was  dreading  though was Sharon coming back and just stealing the whole thing and that’s not  her style at all.

‘She’s come back and, like I said, she’s  brought out the worst in everyone which everyone is loving.

‘And so going onto the set each day,  especially in the rooms, it was just like I can’t wait to get up there and have  a laugh.’
